Intro to Butter Goods x PUMA, SS2022.
For our second collaboration with Garth and Matthew of Butter Goods, we continued to explore the PUMA archive together to look for vintage gems; this time, however, we wanted to also bring in an element of Outdoor with an inspiration of hiking and trekking. As our collaboration was during the toughest moments of COVID-19, the participation in Outdoor sports peaked in both Germany and in Australia (our respective locations) so this was an important focal point for the collection. We wanted to continue the momentum of creating “future collectors items” with this collection, whilst introducing new subtly-technical materials to set this collection apart.

Our inspiration stemms from archival outdoor gear, the Barcelona 1992 Olympics, vintage PUMA Apparel and product labelling, OG skate silhouettes and 90’s/2k hiking boots. It’s all an ecelctic compilation of passions and interests that makes the Butter Goods x PUMA range so compelling.

The Graphic Design inspiration comes from PUMA archival woven labels, bubble-like logo executions of the early 2k and thick rubber prints. We’ve utilised the graphics in a variety of graphic treatments throughout the collection, such as in a knitted jacquard for a full-front body panel (polo), in various woven labels of small and medium size, in 3D embroideries and in thick, rubber prints.

Graphic Design and execution by Javier Barrantes Sanchez, Senior Graphic Designer for PUMA. Graphic Design direction and vision by Garth Mariano and Matt Evans of Butter Goods.

The complete collection is an eclectic mix of collectors-items. Stand-out pieces include the pop-over Jacket in a recycled nylon with a matt outlook and soft crinkle, the heavy-weight cotton ripstop jacket in multi-colour tones with an engineered woven label, and the knitted engineered jacquard polo which references our archieve in a modern, bold way. Easy pieces include the 450g Cotton French Terry Hoodie with a 3D bubble logo, wide-legged pants and shorts in a Cordura Woven with durable mesh pocketing and grosgrain belts, and an easy 210g Cotton Single Jersey Tee with rubber-printed graphics. Overall the collection is highly functional, durable, skate-credible and celebrates PUMA’s rich history in sports.
